What Our Search for Belonging Reveals

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

Why does the word “belong” strike such a huge chord of deep longing among us? Let this article by The Gospel Coalition take you on an exploration of what it means to belong!

Despite all the great advances in technology, we’re far more distracted and far lonelier than we’ve ever been. This doesn’t apply just to those who are seeking Jesus, or who haven’t yet come to know who He is—the search for belonging also exists within our congregations. As we ponder the question of what it means to belong, we also wonder: who are our people?

Jeremy Linneman, the author of this article, argues that the church is God’s creation to “set the lonely in families” (Ps. 68:6), to give us a place to belong. He further explains how belonging takes several forms in Scripture, and isn’t as complicated as we think it is. Rather, it’s a truth that gets expressed three ways in the New Testament.

Read on to understand more about what it means to belong not to ourselves or to this world, but instead to belong to Jesus Christ, and to one another in the church!
