We all have heroes and people we look up to, whether it's in our study field, sports players, well-known people from history or people we personally know. We also have heroes and people we admire in our faith. It is godly and appropriate to have heroes in our Christian faith - mentors, examples, leaders who go before us, journey with us and help us see what it looks like to follow Jesus. Yet no leader is perfect. Leaders can let you down sometimes. Maybe it's a moral failing, an inconsiderate comment they made, a leadership blind spot, a deficiency of wisdom or some other weakness. This is because we are all flawed and broken beings. But that doesn't diminish the darkness, pain or confusion experienced by those who look up to them - especially when a ministry leader you know personally hurts you or reveals a grave sin.
Take a look at this article as it talks about the disappointment we face when a spiritual leader lets us down, but the hope there is in the one who knows and sees all things and who meets all our needs in himself.
May these experiences, as pain as they can be, lead us to placing our hope more fully in Jesus Christ himself. As we come to him broken, hurting, and disillusioned, he meets our needs in himself. Truly, the greatest heroes, people or leaders we look up to today are not worthy of our ultimate allegiance. But Christ is, and he will never disappoint.
